How to Make the Great First Impression on Your Job Interview

Entrego Fulfillment Solutions

Nervous about your job interview? Keep these tips handy before meeting your future employer.

You’ve been running yourself ragged sending résumés everywhere just to get that dream job offer. And now someone called back and told you to come in for an interview. Congratulations!

But how sure are you that you’re ready for that job interview? You can’t just wait for the interview day and come in to their office without doing anything. If you really want to land that job, there’s a lot of preparation involved, and you can start preparing as early as now. We’ve got some tips right here just for you.

Be knowledgeable about the position and the company

Before anything else, you need to know what you’re applying for. What is the company all about? What are they trying to accomplish? What is the position and its duties and responsibilities? If you don’t know these things when you come into the interview, you’re just setting yourself up for failure.

Practice interviewing

Even if you know everything there is to know about the company and the position, all the knowledge won’t be of any use if you don’t know how to communicate. Practice answering questions that might come up in the interview. And practice greeting your interviewer, because that first exchange will be a huge step towards making a good first impression.

Dress suitably

It’s important to prepare your clothes way before the day of your interview. You should research on the dress code of the company and match your interview clothes accordingly. If you’re overdressed or underdressed, you're definitely going to lose some brownie points, so dress suitably. Iron your clothes and make sure you look presentable and employable.

Groom well

It’s not only your clothes that would need to pass muster; your overall look should be appropriate as well. The interviewer is going to take note of everything about you, and if you have just-woke-up-and-rolled-out-of-bed hair, then you’re not making a very good first impression.

You will definitely need to comb your hair, at least. Spritz on some perfume--but just enough that it won’t overpower your interviewer’s sense of smell. And ladies, don’t put too much makeup on; it should be just enough to highlight your best features.

Freshen up after commuting

Okay, so you’ve dressed suitably and groomed well, but you have to go through the bowels of the city and commute through heavy traffic. You can’t show up all haggard and tired in your interview! Stop by a cafe and take some time to freshen up. Put on some cologne, comb your hair, and redo your makeup.

Arrive on time

You might’ve done every tip we’ve given above, but it will all be useless if you don’t arrive on time for your interview. Before you even get to the company’s office, your interviewer has already seen your résumé and has already started getting to know you. Showing up on time is the next step in making a good impression and securing that job.

At the end of the day, it’s all a matter of being prepared for anything the company throws your way.
